Nobody's fault?

'Nobody blames you, Colm'

That was the headline in the Indo. So it must have been someone else driving the car when it flew over a ditch, or maybe the road surface is to blame, or some other road user, or a mechanical failure.

According to the Indo, "the car had been stopped by a concerned garda just hours before the fatal collision. He stopped the car in Roscommon town on Thursday evening and warned the driver to take care on the road".

Who lets a seventeen-year-old boy out in a car like that anyway? It may be legal, but it's surely not sensible.

We won't apportion blame here. We'll wait for the guards and the courts, if it comes to that, decide blame, not a bebo page littered with petrolhead car-porn. We hope he does get well, but it would have been better if he hadn't got himself and his friends into this situation in the first place.

In general, the sooner we stop pretending that tragedy is an excuse for stupidity or recklessness the better.
